In March, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio erupted when President Donald Trump stated that he was considering implementing travel restrictions to the state due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Governor Cuomo told news outlets that such travel restrictions constituted “an act of war”; and he threatened legal action against state governors that forced travelers from NY to quarantine for fourteen days after arrival.
Now, both Cuomo and de Blasio are exemplifying exactly what hypocrisy looks like by doing exactly what President Trump suggested just a few months ago. Mayor de Blasio has just announced that he is setting up travel checkpoints on all major roads leading into the Big Apple, and will force travelers into town to fill out paperwork and quarantine for fourteen days if they are arriving from the more than two dozen “hot states.”
Governor Cuomo has tried to justify his stance by saying that states that curtailed New Yorkers’ traveling rights in March singled out New York instead of applying the restrictions to numerous states. However, he fails to note the obvious fact that, in March, New York was the undisputed COVID-19 epicenter in the United States. It had far more cases than any other state, so it would have made sense for governors to target New Yorkers without restricting travel from other states.
This isn’t the only time that both Cuomo and de Blasio have showcased their hypocrisy for the world to see. A federal judge recently pointed out that the mayor and governor exceeded their authority by severely curtailing believers’ rights to gather and worship — while encouraging large outdoor protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death.
It’s also worth pointing out that Mayor de Blasio has admitted that he allowed painters of recent “Black Lives Matter” murals in the city to skip the permitting process — all while forcing conservative organizations such as Blue Lives Matter and Women for America First to deal with municipal bureaucracy for the same thing.
It’s clear that liberal politicians think the rules don’t apply to them. The same politicians that claim worshippers can’t gather together recently disregarded basic social distancing guidelines and crammed into a Georgia church to pay respects to the late Rep. John Lewis.
De Blasio allows BLM activists to do as they please while cracking down on others for conducting similar activities. Cuomo thinks that “walling off states” is “totally bizarre, counterproductive, anti-American, and anti-social” when other states do it. However, he has no problem doing it himself when he feels it’s in his state’s best interests.
